Good evening, friends, family, and loved ones.
Please join us this Thursday at 9 Bleecker as we celebrate a milestone!
A long time ago (in an old Dutch metropolis far far away from northwestern paradise…) SCRiBE The Verbalist started a weekly engagement that came to be known as OPEN MiC Thursdays — or 9 Bleecker OPEN MiC, named after the show's venue.
With the help of his trusty friend, DJ, and co-host Ford4D, SCRiBE grew the OPEN MiC into a bustling event that regularly filled 9 Bleecker with attendees and performers alike.
Yes, over time much did change: the show, its frequency, the host, and even the venue's interior have changed. Yet many things have remained the same: the night of the week, the DJ/soundman, the nurturing atmosphere of 9 Bleecker, and most importantly a sense of supportive openness and inclusion instilled into the show by SCRiBE.
The OPEN MiC is founded upon the idea of creating a receptive and encouraging environment for people to share with each other. SCRiBE has always fought to keep the event open, embracing as wide a variety of interests, talents, and non-talents as possible, and resisting the natural (and often unconscious) tendency of others to pigeon-hole the event into 'a Hip Hop night' after witnessing his captivating performances as an emcee.
As we move forward with the OPEN MiC, I want to make sure that I typify this attitude that SCRiBE carried — constantly looking to enlarge the size of our tent while staying true to our Hip Hop roots — as well as upholding the principles and values he promoted in the show.
This 50th OPEN MiC represents a renewal of my ongoing commitment to the community it fosters, and hopefully a renewal of the attendance and diversity the show enjoyed during its original weekly run.
I hope that you will all join me in celebrating and strengthening our OPEN MiC.
